STOP THE RELATIONSHIP MADNESS TODAY!

One of the hardest things is untangling the confusion that comes from relationship arguments..

Here is an example conversation I analyze in "Stellar Relationships":

her: I don't feel loved by you anymore

him: Why do you feel that way?

her: You used to seem so excited to see me and now you hardly notice me. You would rather sit at your computer or watch TV than spend time with me.

him: That's not true, i still want to be with you. I felt you closed up lately and I didn't know why, so I thought it would leave you alone until you were ready to talk. I don't know what to when you get in those moods, jeez – what do you want from me.

her: I want you to care like you used to care or at least show it. I've been closing up because you never want to spend time with me anymore. When is the last time we went out to a movie, or spent time together. It's like you have no excitement to be with me anymore, I could be anyone - i don't feel loved.

him: We are always spending time together, man!, (getting frustrated) last week we went out to a movie, you've been busy most of the time lately. Why can't you just relax - what is the big deal. This makes no sense.

her: OK, yes you're right, we just went out last week and I've been really busy too, but I'm not happy at all in this relationship now. I feel myself closing up, because things have changed – you don't love me anymore. (she starts crying – he starts to soften, but is angry and not sure what to do)

This is a relatively tame argument, at least by most standards. There's no name-calling but there are plenty of accusations, disguised as/mixed in with the expression of feelings.

Let's examine this conversation line by line:

her: “I don't feel loved by you anymore”

---- good - straight ahead feeling – no accusation

him: “Why do you feel that way?”

--- Also good, direct question – says "tell me more"

her: “You used to seem so excited to see me and now you hardly notice me”.

--- Not too bad, but “you hardly notice me” is a value judgment, telling him what he means, not asking him. The word “seem” is very effective. It is saying “this is my observation”, not “this is a fact”.

“You would rather sit at your computer or watch TV than spend time with me”.

--- Not good at all – a straight accusation filled with judgment. She is not praising him for this behavior. She's saying this is what you're doing, what it means, and it is wrong.

him: “That's not true, i still want to be with you. I felt you closed up lately and I didn't know why, so I thought it would leave you alone until you were ready to talk”.

-- This is not too bad, but telling her she has been “closed up lately”might not be the best choice in this moment.

“I don't know what to when you get in those moods, jeez – what do you want from me”.

--- Not very good at all, especially the “jeez – what you want from me”. It shows he's frustrated and resentful at having to talk about the relationship. This actually would not have been too bad at all, especially if she had been obviously in a quiet or bad mood lately. But the flustered ending has to go.

her: “I want you to care like you used to care or at least show it. I've been closing up because you never want to spend time with me anymore. When is the last time we went out to a movie, or spent time together. It's like you have no excitement to be with me anymore, I could be anyone”

--- Not good. Telling him how he feels, what his actions mean, presenting a challenge about “the last time we went out or spend time together”.

I don't feel loved.

-- Good, how she feels

him: “We are always spending time together, man!, (getting more irritated) last week we went out to a movie, you've been busy most of the time lately. Why can't you just relax - what is the big deal. This makes no sense.

--- None of this is good. He's justifying himself, getting irritated, refuting her “points”, rather than listening to the heart of the woman. The most important things she has said it is “I don't feel loved”. That was the door. He did not walk through it, instead he is trying to win and frustrated that she is not "making sense".

her: OK, yes you're right, we just went out last week and I've been really busy too, but I'm not happy at all in this relationship now. I feel myself closing up, because things have changed, you don't love me anymore. (she starts crying – he starts to soften, but is angry and not sure what to do)

-- Not too bad, she is admitting to a few details that has the man perplexed. Yet her crisis is one of not feeling understood or heard by him, and not being able to communicate in a language he understands. Her saying “you don't love me anymore” doesn't help.

This woman may likely feel as though she is just telling him “how she feels” but there are many accusations thrown in there also and things the man may try to defend either to set the record straight / defend himself OR explain how she misunderstood. For example: He was not trying to ignore her by working on his computer, he thought she wanted to be alone because she had been quiet.

BTW - In the book I am not just telling women how to change or do better, i am showing male clods to stop expecting everything to "make sense" also,, etc. As i said here, when he missed the point.
